There is no doubt that for many people the term “chemical” has a negative connotation. Little wonder, since in the lay press the word is almost always preceded by “toxic,” “noxious” “dangerous,” “poisonous” or some other pejorative adjective.
The impression created is that all chemicals are to be feared. The reality is that chemicals are not good or bad, they are just the building blocks of all matter. It is the amount of a chemical and its context of use that determines its risk-benefit profile.
Chemicals are to be understood, not feared. Here we will attempt to discuss chemical issues in a responsible, unbiased fashion, remembering that there is no such thing as a safe or a dangerous chemical, only safe or dangerous ways to use chemicals.
